Disability living allowance
« on: August 25, 2012, 02:38:54 PM »
PLEASE MOVE IF IN WRONG PLACE.

I few months ago I was advised by the job centre to apply for disability living allowance, which I did and was then told that I was not eligable, through the information I provided. I didn't appleal and have now run out of time. But since talking to a friend who works with disabled and dyslexic students she highlighted areas where I woul of had a stronger claim and has suggested that I reapply.

Does anyone on here know how long you have to wait to reapply?

I think you can apply straight away  but either call them to check or ask at your local CAB  ,

When you fill it in again  ask your local CAB to help you

for mine I put my worst day experiences down   it also helps   if you can get a professional like your cpn . cc etc to fill in  that  personal statement thing on the last page stating how bad you are / can be  my occupational therapist did mine for me .

After being diagnosed with BPD the psychiatrist was like "well my job is done" so it is me, my GP and a counsellor from a youth charity. But do have a friend who works with disability and dyslexia in a university department so will more than likely sit down with her and fill it in.  It was talking to her that I realised that I did the form wrong.

Thanks for the advice, I looked and looked on the direct gov website but couldn't find a specific date. May ring the benefits line after the bank holdiay to be absolutly certain. :)

Your local CAB should have a mh advisor. I don't know if there's a waiting time before you can reapply, but I can't recommend the CAB mh person highly enough. They filled in the forms with me, and they are fantastic. I thought a lot of the questions didn't apply to me, but she explained how they do apply in mh terms, and it's not always what you think.

Good luck with it. I also found out if you do qualify for the higher care rate, you may be entitled to working tax credits (if you work), too. Which is a bit odd, because without the DLA I earnt too much, but the care rate entitles you to it? Strange

There is a waiting time before you can reapply. I cant remember whether its 3 months or 6 months though.
The thing with DLA is you have to fill it out as if it is your worse days of your worse days. If theres times at night when you need someone to come to your aid then say that, even if it might only happen once a month. If you dont succeed again then make sure you go to appeal. That gives you a chance to tell them what its really like for you when you get bad.
Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean that they aren't really out to get you.

I think you have to wait a certain length of time (six months springs to mind) to apply with the same illness/disability/symptoms. I'm not saying anything new that hasn't been said but I highly recommend seeing someone from CAB. It doesn't have to be a specialist mental health caseworker - generalist advisers (i.e. the volunteers) are all trained to deal with benefits and will have completed DLA forms with clients before (I did this frequently as a volunteer CAB adviser). The best thing is to spend as much time as possible on the form (takes at least a couple of hours) and put in plenty of detail. Hope you get sorted.

You can re-apply straight away. Even if you have a claim in process and something changes in your circumstances you can reapply. If you were turned down this time and missed your appeal cut off (though with a very good reason you can theoretically appeal up to 13 months after the decision -has to be REALLY good reason why you didn't though) then I would highly recommend getting help to fill in the next one, such as CAB or from an organisation that specifically supports any condition you may have. Also work towards gathering as much supporting evidence as possible for your claim.
