Title: Amitriptyline
Post by: Blue_Human on March 10, 2012, 08:31:27 PM
I have recently been put on amitriptyline for medical reasons and I have found my mood to be quite dramatically changing and I feel really groggy, slow and tired. I am on a low dose and haven't been on them long, I was just wondering is this normal and has anyone else had any experience with this drug? I'm a bit worried how this will further effect my uni attendance, but I don't really want to talk to my advisor.  Thank you :)

I was on them years ago...evil stuff for me so came off them very quickly. Hope someone can be more helpful. Can you speak to your doc?

Hope it wasn't too bad Faith! I have to go back next week due to blood tests anyway, so I might speak to her then. It's really weird, like I didn't really expect to feel different, I just feel so like detached and slow and tired and stuff, it's not enjoyable haha. I think I did read that it was a side effect, but yeah.

Thank you Faded, hopefully it will this time!

Just wanted to reassure you a bit, I have been on it for 3 years for depression starting at 200mg and now at 50mg- at 200mg there was a grogginess but it did get better and the lower my dose the better. But even on on the high dose I got used yo it. I would say give it chance. Hope it gets better for you   :hug1:

I was on it for 2 weeks to help me sleep but I became actively suicidal. Please be careful with it. Take care

Thank you guys :) I feel really tired and slow today, more so than yesterday. I'm also getting thoughts about harming which I haven't had for a while, but this might just link to the tiredness. I might just speak to my GP when I go back, it has helped with sleeping though

Thank you both :) Do you know if you are allowed to just stop taking meds if you haven't been on them that long?

It's not advisable without talking to doc or chemist. I've done it before from a really low dose coz they messed with me so much n if I hadn't who knows what would have happened but it's not a great thing to do. Can you ring your chemist/doc for advise? If you're thinking of stopping without weaning off you must weigh up the pros n cons first but always seek medical advice first hun. Hope you're ok :hug2:

I might speak to the nurse tomorrow when I get my blood test. I can't handle the moods and the urges of harming, I just feel so low mentally and ill physically, I'm hoping I will adjust sooner rather than later, but I might come off them. I don't know. Thank you both though :)

Just thought I would do a quick update. I have come off of the other tablets and am on new ones. The doctor said we can revisit the other ones in the future if need be, but I am feeling so much better on these tablets already :D Thank you for all your help!
