Title: SharpTalk Research Study
Post by: NSHN CG on May 19, 2009, 04:08:19 PM
Are you 16-25 years old? Have you self-harmed or do you know someone who self-harms? Are you interested in taking part in a research project exploring the use of bulletin boards for young people who self-harm? Follow this link for further information http://sharptalk.part.icipate.net

NSHN support this study and are providing moderator training for the project.

Definitely worth emailing them if you're having problems, they're probably ironing out the last glitches and it'll be useful for them to know people are having troubles as early on as possible :)

Please stick with it and if you cant get in then try in a day or two. The researchers are ironing out things and the forum itself goes live in a few weeks time, so all you are doing first is registering for an account. And at the end of the day, the £25 Amazon voucher makes it worth it!

Just a quick question- anyone know if under 18s have to have parental consent? Would definitely like to do it, but if I need consent I can't.
Title: Re: SharpTalk Research Study
Post by: Je7 on May 19, 2009, 09:57:42 PM
It wouldn't let me do it either- please can someone let me know when they get a reply from their email.

Frozen- I'm pretty sure they wouldn't want parental consent, as I *hope*they realise it's hardly a subject we talk about with the parents. I think it might be different if under 16, but you can see a GP and keep things confidential, so I'm pretty sure it's ok.

Title: Re: SharpTalk Research Study

I think the reason everyone can't PM each other is that we're split into three groups so perhaps you can't talk to the people in the other groups.

Title: Re: SharpTalk Research Study

that makes sense.

But then again I could see Aimee p_l and Firenze at the bottom and couldn't PM them. Just presumed they 're in my group cause I could see they were active.

does anyone know where to put general feedback acutally bout hte site...coz idk nd i dont wanan seem rude or nething so i was wondering if there was a certiain place

oh and btw i know you lot cant see it so ive asked for a PM alert system because at the momnet you just have to check all the time incase someoen has PMed you....the mods say the techs are on it

hun that sounds liek a good idea even if we cant see it

Title: Re: SharpTalk Research Study
Post by: awkwardangel on June 16, 2009, 06:48:10 PM
the mods are irrelevant to the outcome because the study is about self harm support forums and how they help individuals who are members. So mods are irrelevant cause mods are on all forums.

Make sense? Hard to explain....
Title: Re: SharpTalk Research Study

Title: Re: SharpTalk Research Study

Without mods on any forum, things could very easily get out of hand, if a bitchy comment is made, and not deleted, it could get bitchier and bitchier, and someone could easlily be very upset and or triggered

Title: Re: SharpTalk Research Study
Post by: phoebe_monkey on June 18, 2009, 08:06:15 PM
Yeah, that doesn't make any sense. Wonder if the pros have been told not to post for the first week or something? Strange.

Well... it's not that busy, but we've currently got 15 topics + 121 posts in the Support/Crisis room, 13 topics + 97 posts in the Debates/Discussion room and 3 topics + 70 posts in the Random and off topic room. There are 22 people in our welcome thread- excluding the 3 (or 4?) mods and 2 researchers.

What about your group?

Title: Re: SharpTalk Research Study
Post by: phoebe_monkey on June 18, 2009, 09:39:11 PM
I think that the pros are meant to be posting with us.

It says on the main website,
"We plan to have three separate discussion groups running at the same time. One will be made up entirely of young people with experience of self-harm; the other groups will contain a different mix of young people, healthcare students and qualified health professionals. This is because one of the things we want to do is compare how young people talk to each other when they are alone with how they talk when there are health professionals and students present. We will not tell you who else is in your group because that might influence the way you talk."

Title: Re: SharpTalk Research Study
Post by: awkwardangel on June 25, 2009, 02:26:20 PM
SharpTalk seems stricter than here on NSHN. Cause I got a PM saying that my thread had been deleted. Fair enough I thought but I couldn't understand why. Cause it had all the necesary trigger warnings etc, and it was basically the same things I'd been writing on here.  :trig: It was just suicidal thoughts etc. nothing horific and if it had been i would have put a trig warning.

Anyway... rant over.

I don't really like the format of sharptalk anyway , i prefer here .  :hug2: for nshn! lol yeah, well its hard to explain what i mean so....hmm.

Did they not give you a reason for deleting your post? That seems a bit off. I quite like sharptalk, but I think they're still finding their feet a bit.
Title: Re: SharpTalk Research Study
Post by: awkwardangel on June 25, 2009, 05:15:12 PM
he said it was too graphic? but i hadnt posted anything about wounds. or in depth gross details of suicidal plans. it was just like other people post on here for example, when their feeling suicidal.

by the way thats not the reason that im not to enthusiastic about it. I didnt think it was excellent before. but its ok.

I quickly got intimidated by everyone after being shot down on a few things, so I don't post any where near as much as I did in the first week, I hardly post at all now.

The thing is it's now quite support focussed and I don't feel very comfortable posting for support or supporting others right now. I preferred when there was more discussion.

It's not even about the researchers really. It's just that there are few enough users that I sort of feel in the spotlight. I don't want to say the wrong thing.

I used it for a while, then life got even more mental and I wasn't on RYL, NSHN or SharpTalk and I can't remember my password. Are we still getting the amazon voucher??

If you've filled in the survey they sent you, then you should get one. Maybe worth contacting them if you didn't receive it?

I think their funding ran out hun, sadly sometimes that's just how it goes. I'm sure they'd love to hear from you though and they'll be able to tell you more about what happened if you contact them via email :)

I started reading and got sucked in, so I'll be looking at that instead of doing my revision!

I'm glad to see that they got quite a bit out of it, it's just a shame the site's gone.
