Swimming and SH *mt*
« on: May 16, 2014, 09:10:25 AM »
How healed must cuts be to swim?

I'm desperate to start swimming again but don't know how long I have to leave it. My arms are all scabbed over and would be the only places on show. I've got a couple of steri stripped cuts elsewhere but they're knitting together well and I would cover them with a waterproof dressing and it'd be covered by my swimsuit.

I don't want to risk infecting myself, or God forbid them hauling me out of the pool for it!

Could you ask your GP? Even just a phone call to the surgery might be able to tell you?

I like walking in the rain because then nobody can see me cry

It's best not to get any wound wet that has steri-strips. Waterproof plasters are ok but my sister had one on in the shower to cover some mole removal stitches and it came off and the stitches got wet. I'd say it's best not to risk it just yet but it's down to you really.

That'd involve explaining that I'm self harming again ::)

I think I'll leave it for this week. Better safe than sorry. Google suggests things need to be healed over.

I think that's a good idea. Even if your wound is coming together well, being submerged in water could soften it up and it could pop open again. Definitely not worth risking it for now.

Loose plasters in swimming pools are horrible  eek

Also got to bear in mind the risk of infection,

I would let them heal properly.

Maybe it would be a good thing your GP knowing your harming again
