Eating Disorders Clinic Experiences
« on: July 23, 2013, 06:41:54 PM »
I just wanted to know if anyone has had an assessment at the Eating Disorders and what it was like etc.

I'm due to see them for my initial assessment 13th August and am a bit nervous about it so any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks forum-ers :)

At mine, the assessments have involved first a physical examination and then just an assessment like any other MH one really, except with more focus on food and all that. They'll most likely ask about your intake, behaviours, body image, thoughts, and ask what you'd like/might find useful. They'll most likely also ask about sleep, mood, self harm, relationships an any other previous treatment.

Assessments are never the most fun (especially the physical part - but try to remember that they genuinely, honestly so see ALL shapes and sizes and statistics, and if it's a decent place they will hopefully try to tackle more the psychological causes rather than focu on the physical stuff) but try to be honest so that they can help you best. If there's anything else I can answer then I'd be happy to. Good luck x

Thank you Bethy, it's really nice to have a reply and some advice.

I am nervous about it and I feel like a faker and that they'll see right through me and send away and laugh.

Been sent a long pre assessment questionnaire to fill out.

So the physical part, what do they do? Make you strip down?

Hey,

At the one I go to for outpatient you meet with one member of the team, for me it was a nurse specialist, and they run through the usual mental health assessment type things. So they might ask you your story, how you've come to be at the clinic, what you hope to achieve through treatment, psychosocial things like your living arrangements, whether you're working etc etc. At mine the physical they did just involved being weighed, having my height done and then my bloods taken. I then had a second assessment a week later where they rechecked my weight and gave me self help sources whilst on the waiting list.

Good luck with it x
