i would agree with that- while some distractions work for me, i'd rather not feel urges at all, i'd rather not have to distract myself from what i'm feeling all the time.
i find distractions can be useful in the short term but as tigger said i think what causes you to SH in the first place is the more important thing towards putting SH completely behind you...

I am also worried about the effectiveness of any coping methods while the underlying cause of any self harm still persists. Self harm itself has been, to me, the most effective coping method, if of course not the most desirable or healthy. I have tried some of the other things mentioned and similar, but they've sadly not been enough. For the sake of contribution though, about the closest I ever come is comfort eating.

Tigger is right controlling your life so you don't get the triggers helps a lot and then because unfortunately I can't control the world I count minute by minute until the craving has passed. Hope that helps.
