Self Harm and your Out
« on: September 06, 2013, 09:54:42 PM »
 :doggy:

I am being told by my consultant psychiatrist and therapist that if I self harm I will be chucked off the course. I have six months left, I can't not self harm for six months. I can't act out any of my Suicidal ideation either.

I have no idea what I am going to do, the CMHT want nothing to do with me so its not like I have an alternative for help I have nothing except my GP.

I have been told similar by my local NHS Mental Health Services. They wont work with me until I can promise that I wont self harm or have an anxiety attack and thus I dont work with them as bringing up all the things that I wanted their help to overcome will undoubtedly increase my urge to harm and make me feel anxious.

I have no offer of advice other than maybe look into charities that offer councelling services at a reduced cost (if financing private Mental Health Services is an issue).

Just didn't want you left feeling like youre alone, as I am sure we are not the only ones left in this position.  :hug1:

That's awful, Hash :( what course is it? To me this seems completely out of order, surely they can't do this? They're supposed to help you feel better. How do they expect people to talk more freely about self harm, when in a way they are punishing people who do it? Argh  :ranting:
I'm sorry, that you have been put in this situation.

Hash,
Can you access advocacy? It is shocking that the cmht won't have anything more to do with you, especially when it's not too long ago (I think I read on here) since you were an inpatient in a suicidal state. They are meant to follow people up after admissions within seven days. Why do the cmht not respond to you - sorry to ask, I don't want to pry (eg they say you can't be helped, or don't fit their criteria). I do think that many services are in crisis and stretched to breaking point, but you shouldn't be given this message that they won't see you. BPD is a mental health condition and one that is very deserving of treatment, within secondary care services it does come under complex needs and many people are treated longer term, though often in a specialist service depending on local availability. I wonder if you are treated within such a service then the cmht won't get involved at the same time until you complete that treatment? Either way it sounds really rubbish for you. I do hope that the therapy helps and that you can stay safe while you complete it. Do give yourself a chance though I also wish you hadn't been pushed into that position.

CMHT are not meant to be involved in my care at the moment but they should be involved in six months time.

THE complex needs service is a service  treating people with personality disorders and I had a meeting with them today and they are taking me at my word that I would do everything i can not to self harm and they said that was good and that they would analyse why I was wanting to self harm if I slipped up and self harm and they would analyse the incidence intently and work out whether we can go on.

so I am free, I have to be self harm free as best I can.

I'm in the exact same boat. Sorry I can't offer anything else but it is SO ridiculous and you aren't alone.

I'm not encouraging self harm, in no way. But being a self harmer and understanding its urges, I can understand the stress this must cause you. So, I am going to say..do it where they won't see?
But to be honest, only do it if you feel it's incredibly necessary.  Like if you're feeling REALLY suicidal, ect. You just need to come up with some alternate coping stratergies and find other things to occupie your mind. I hope you understand where I'm coming from.
You just need to find some ways to deal with it. If you slip up, then you slip up. Sometimes we all relapse. Sometimes we can't help it. But try your best! I know you will!
