Therapy may Trig *SH OD SUI*
« on: July 03, 2012, 10:13:07 AM »
I have BPD and have SH'd for 12 yrs.

I have asked for the past 4 years for therapy/counselling. They refuse to give it to me because of the SH. Ummm thats the reason I want it?

I have tried everything except 1 to 1 therapy. Why can't they just give it a go.

At the end of my tether. Any ideas peeps, how I can get therapy?

Who is saying you can't have therapy. If its your gp, speak to your specialist or vice versa or simply speak to a sw if U have one

Would it be worth considering getting an advocate involved to help you out. I don't know much about them but understand they help get your voice heard.

I tried that yesterday. SW just kept saying they wouldn't do it. My advocate was struggling to understand that. She can't do anything really. At least I don't think she can. Am speaking to her in next few days.

I can only speak from a personal perspective.  It took me a long time to get therapy but I just kept beating down the doors (figuratively and once or twice pretty literally!).  Keep going back to your GP, say that you are ready to accept help/therapy.  Perhaps something like DBT which is tailored towards people with BPD?  However, to take part in DBT you have to sign a contract to say you will do everything in your power to reduce (and eventually stop) self-harming with their help.  Just keep trying.  The moment you give up, they forget about you.  If you keep going, they get bored of you eventually and give in.

I feel abit bad for saying this...but ive been offered it a few times and done a few diff thing. At the moment I see a psychotherapist once a week...I still cut and that hasnt been a barrier. But the referal was made by a therapist I saw for some CBT...and the referal to them was by a Dr who was both psych and therapist (tho not sure how).

The only time its been an issue is at the start of this therapy. It was originally transference focused therapy which is twice a week and involved a contract where I was supposed to agree not to cut. I couldnt keep to it so it changed but didnt mean I couldnt still see the same therapist.

Im not sure if GPs are the route to go down. Do you see a psychiatrist? If not I'd ask for one. The waiting list for therapy was long but I defo didnt have to fight for it.

Also do you have a specialist PD service in your area? May be able to help more there.

 :hide:   PD?
Sorry.

I want some form of understanding behind the SH. Why I do it and what I do it for. That way I'm thinking I can work on changing it. No one will help me explore this.

Thanks lily  :hug2:

PD= personality disorder

Sounds like a pretty good reason to do it but I cant understand why they are making you fight to get it.

Have you tried asking for a psychiatrist apt - they would be able to refer you.
Also it might be worth calling somewhere that does therapy and asking who they take referals from.

It shouldn't be the case but often GPs listen better if someone is there with you.
